Celine Dion and René Angélil

New York- Canadian singer Celine Dion’s husband and long-time manager René Angélil died on Thursday at 73 from throat cancer.

"René Angélil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer," Celine’s rep confirmed the sad news to the Huffington Post via email.

"The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time,” the statement added.

The pop singer’s official Facebook Page managed by ‘Equipe Céline’, posted about Angélil’s passing in French.

The message has been shared over 19,000 times and nearly 15,000 comments of condolences and support have been left for Celine and her family.

Music mogul René Angélil and Celine Dion met in 1980 when the singer was 12 years old. They married 14 years later, in December 1994, in a legendary royal-like wedding, despite their big age difference.

According to the same source, Celine and René have three sons; René-Charles born in 2001 and fraternal twins Eddy and Nelson, born in 2010.

Dion is Angélil’s third wife. He had two other sons, Jean Pierre and Patrick, and a daughter named Anne Marie, from his two previous marriages.

Angélil was born January 16, 1942 in Montréal. He underwent 38 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation in his fight against cancer in 1999, after having been diagnosed with cancer three times, the same source noted.

Although it was reported doctors told René he was finally cancer-free, he had a tumor removed from his throat in 2014, a surgery from which he never fully recovered.

In March 2015, Celine gave a heart-breaking statement about her husband’s health during “Good Morning America” television show.

The French-Canadian celebrity revealed with tears in her eyes that René could no longer talk or swallow.

"He can’t eat so I feed him," she said, adding "He’s got a feeding tube. I have to feed him three times a day."

Knowing his terminal condition was ending his life, René and Celine discussed a plan for his final days. She shared the touching moment last August to USA Today.

"I'll say, 'You're scared? I understand. Talk to me about it,'" she would ask her husband.

"And René says to me, 'I want to die in your arms.' OK, fine, I'll be there, you'll die in my arms,” she revealed then.

Celine has always said how grateful she is to René and spoken openly about her endless love for him.

“Creativity is associated with the beauty of nature. I am nowadays in a natural, glamorous place. I seized the opportunity to sing about it and embody nature in order to demonstrate the relationship between creativity and nature. The song was in a collaboration with Yassine Adnane and Soufian El Maliki. Furthermore, It was supported passionately [by] my friends,” Zarug said.

Zarug is currently working with another rapper on a mixtape that will be released in mid-March, in addition to an album in collaboration with other Moroccan artists that will be released in August.

Zarug is not merely an ordinary artist, but is also a producer and a director. He believes that the world is full positive things that allow humans to enjoy the splendor of life. “I always try to make people understand my positive vision and philosophy in life that might help us to contribute [to] the development of the world,” Zarug said. “Thus, people need blissful and happy songs as a form of celebration.”

Cheb Hasni: Icon who Inspired North African Youth

Cheb Hasni. Icon who Inspired North African Youth

Rabat - Throughout history, the assassination of public figures has caused far-reaching indignation throughout the world, and questions remain such as who killed Malcom X, Tupac Shakur, and John F. Kennedy.  The murder of Cheb Hasni sparked similar outrage.

Hasni Chakroun, a popular Algerian rai singer well known by his stage name Cheb Hasni was born in Oran, Algeria, on February 1, 1968. As an outspoken champion of the problems of youth, he quickly rose to popularity stealing the hearts of youth through his dramatic and touching songs.

The beginning of the end: Cheb Hasni’s assassination

On September 30, 1994, an unidentified assailant fired two bullets into Cheb Hasni. The first one penetrated his throat, and the second lodged in his head.

The news of Cheb Hasni’s death spread like wildfire over North Africa’s mass media. His assassination stirred outrage among people in Algeria. His fans around North Africa were shocked — they could not believe that their beloved singer had been taken from them without even saying farewell.

Cheb Hasni’s childhood

Cheb Hasni grew up in a rough neighborhood surrounded by indigents and youth enraged at social barriers and lack of opportunity. He came from a working-class family; his father was a welder and his mother a homemaker.

He was selfless and very familiar in neighborhoods in Algeria with involving himself in teenager’s problems and commoners’ burdens.

His childhood dream was to become a football player. He started playing for an Algerian team at a young age, but an abrupt injury terminated his aspirations for a career in football at the age of 15.

Hasni had had a talent for singing since his childhood. His first performance in public was during a wedding party, and people were mesmerized by his bewitching voice. “La Guinguette Cabaret” was a stepping-stone to unleashing the passion in his voice and proving his artistic credentials.

 Cheb Hasni’s career

The artist’s rise to fame was assured after he began singing about the harsh reality of youth and the dire circumstances they faced.  He gave voice to the shouts of misery of the voiceless and underprivileged people.

The themes of his songs reflected compelling narratives about unemployment, drugs, immigration, the dreams of youth, and epic love stories.

The flamboyant musician was close to the heart of youth through his lyrics that reflected their hidden wounds, especially young people who dreamed of forsaking their North African homeland to emigrate Europe.

Cheb Hasni was called “The King of Sentimental Music” and “The Legend of Rai Music.” His avid fans had become accustomed to exchanging his cassettes among each other and following his latest songs.

He tried to break the social taboos during the beginning of 1990s, when Algeria was under siege from fundamentalists and Islamic extremist terrorist cells.

The emergence of rai movement

During the beginning of the 1980s, Oran, the cultural city of Algeria was teeming with youth who were enraged at their marginalized social status.

Rai music had emerged in the late 1970s, but it had been banned from radio stations, because it was regarded as vulgar and shameful due to its portrayal of matters that were taboo, such as alcoholism and drunkenness, sexual relations, and love stories.

The music was loathed by the so-called bourgeois class and the elites, because did not reflect their way of life. They also considered it to be a decadent genre of music.

Over time, most Algerian artists have moved to Europe, especially to France, to flee suppression and criticism, including Cheb Khaled and Cheb Mami.

However, their outspoken music quickly crossed back over the borders and spread across North Africa and some European countries, including France and Belgium, where many Algerian artists have and still do perform concerts.

A book by Marc Schade-Poulsen describes the emergence of Rai movement in the beginning of 1980s, which paralleled the appearance of the extremist Islamist movements in North Africa.

The book, “Men and Popular Music in Algeria: The Social Significance of Rai,” portrays the dispute between rai and the extremist movement that regarded the music as a feature of western culture that would ruin Islamic conventions by using western instruments and themes that tried to tackle the taboos.

 After Cheb Hasni’s death

Prominent Russian author Leo Tolstoy was right when he said, “Art... A human activity having for its purpose the transmission of the highest and best feelings to which men have risen.”

After Cheb Hasni had died, the passion of his fans grew even greater. They kept listening to his songs and visiting his tomb. On September 30 of each year, faithful fans, who still listen to him even now, commemorate the anniversary of his death by posting his songs on social media and writing lovely posts about him, indicating their continuing strong ties with his songs.

In addition, Algerian channels and news outlets write about his musical journey, and never fail to ask, who killed Cheb Hasni?

..A Group of Artists Bring the Ivorians Together To Chant, “We Are Not Even Afraid of Terrorism”

Rabat - Amid the panic in Cote d’Ivoire on March 13 during an attack on a beach in Grand-Bassam, a group of 11 Ivorian musicians collaborated to release a song entitled “Même Pas Pour,” or “Not Even Afraid”, to express their solidarity with the victims and express courage to overcome terrorists’ radicalism.

The video clip was shot in the preferred destination for Ivoirians and foreigners on Grand-Bassam beach, the same place where Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) killed 19 people.

Accompanied by upbeat dances, the Ivorian musicians sung in French to address the terrorists, saying that killing innocents is a sin. They also to show that they are not afraid of terrorism as long as all religions call for peace and tolerance.

The four-minute video clip portrays the musicians on Grand-Bassam beach, wearing t-shirts printed “Même Pas Pour”, along with the Ivorian flag.

Identified as a Collectif Bassam, the musicians brought Ivorians together to chant the chours defiantly in one voice, “In Ivory Coast, we are standing up, jihadists, we are not even afraid.”

"What are you doing on the beaches? Because of 70 virgins, you kill innocent people.”

"In the name of God, you there, you won't go to paradise.”

Chico Lacoste, the song's producer, said he wondered what he could do in response to the attack.

"What do we have to fight these bandits? We have a microphone," he said. "So we decided to

release a song to tell people not be scared of these barbarians. We have to keep on living."

Siro, one of the 11 artists, said that the aim of the song is meant to encourage people to stand up to terror by not changing their lifestyles.

"That barbarism wanted to show us death," he said. "We don’t want their barbarism to impose on us their way of life. We had to use the opposite; we had to use joy."

“The tolerant tune brought the Ivorians together to relieve their fear and not let the attack tear them apart,” Siro said as he sat next to another musician.

"Here is Mawa Traoré, who is a Muslim artist," he said. "I’m Christian. We wanted to show people that we are one. Like a keyboard. A musical keyboard has different notes, but when you play them together, you get a melody."
